Homelessness Week 2017 in Australia

Next week, August 7-13, is Homelessness Week 2017 in Australia. This annual week of raising awareness of homelessness is coordinated by Homelessness Australia (HA), the national peak body providing the country with systemic advocacy for the homelessness sector. This year's theme for the week is 'Action and Innovation'. This theme will highlight the numerous effective strategies and services implemented in response to homelessness. Although the organization does not currently hold events for the week, they develop a campaign theme and share public resources, such as information sheets, while promoting events being held by other organizations across the country. Follow along the week's events using #100Khomes #endhomelessness and #HW2017.

Chris Harrowell reports that local Board Chairwoman Angela Dalton and Manurewa-Papakura Ward Councilor Daniel Newman have requested a meeting with the Social Development Minister to address the issue. The community is advocating for the local and central government to establish policies and provide funding to help end rough sleeping. Last week, people gathered in the South Auckland suburb to show their support in solving the issue after the recent death of a man experiencing homelessness in the community. According to the article, Auckland mayor, Phil Goff, and Social Housing Minister Amy Adams launched a housing first initiative earlier this year - a joint project between the council, government, and five community social housing providers put in place to help solve the issue.
