L.A. County Approves Plan To Fight Homelessness

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has committed to following through with a wide-ranging set of recommendations to combat homelessness across the city. The recommendations come from a census generated from a working group of representatives of public and private organizations, as well as feedback from public hearings. According to Chief Executive Officer Sachi Hamai, L.A. County's plan is expected to move 45,000 families and individuals experiencing homelessness into permanent housing over the next five years. In addition, the plan will execute homelessness prevention measures for approximately another 30,000 individuals and families. Strategies include outreach, crisis housing, permanent housing and prevention.

The City of Córdoba Plans to Increase Housing for Those Experiencing Homelessness

Through a collaborative project between the city of Córdoba (Spain) and the RAIS Fundación, Córdoba will double the number of second-chance homes for people experiencing homelessness in the city. This collaboration is based on the pilot and innovative project, Habitat, which proposes solving homelessness by the housing first methodology. The project is said to be more cost efficient than conventional care solutions in place. The housing within this program is also complimented by other services such as health services, psychological care, detox programs and disability or senior benefits. According to the City Council's latest census, there are approximately just over 200 people experiencing homelessness in the city - a decrease from the year 2015.

Homelessness Charities Join Forces to Help Rough Sleepers in Edinburgh and Glasgow, Scotland

Edinburgh and Glasgow, Scotland can expect to see an improvement in services to those sleeping rough thanks to a collaboration between two outreach-based charities in Scotland. Glasgow-based charity Simon Community Scotland and Edinburgh-based counterpart Streetwork will now both be led by Lorraine McGrath, as chief executive. The dual role that McGrath will play within both charities is expected to assist in the exchange of expertise in joint pursuits of providing support to the population of people experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness, or rough sleeping. Both charities have a long-standing reputation of work in their cities - with Streetwork providing support to those sleeping rough for 25 years and Simon Community Scotland for just over 50 years. McGrath says, “we are specialists in working directly with people sleeping rough on our streets. This collaboration is a really significant step forward for us as we work towards trying to solve this so visible and heart-wrenching situation we all see on the streets of our cities”.
